the Angel and the Devil

Juliette Guignard : viola da gamba / Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas : harpsichord

“The viol’s empire was founded and powerfully established by Father Marais. […] Forcroi Senior (Antonay Forqueray) had just added to the empire. […] His Majesty Louis XIV favoured the viol, Father Marais for his pieces and Forcroi Senior (Antoine Forqueray) for his Sonata-like Preludes. One was said to play like an Angel, the other one like a Devil.”

_ Hubert Le Blanc, Défense de la basse de viole contre les enterprises du violon et les prétentions du violoncelle, 1740

In reference to this wonderful quote, we will present you works from those illustrious composers and violists.
We chose to confront those two opposing yet similar characters due to their crossing careers and the fact they both held the position of ordinary musician of the royal chamber in the court of Louis XIV.
