Bach Inspiration

With Juliette Hurel, flute et Maylïs de Villoutreys, soprano
6 instruments

In 2017, Juliette Hurel and Les Surprises ensemble collaborate in order to highlight the pieces of one of western music’s greatest master: Johann-Sebastian Bach.

While presenting sacred as well as secular works, this program concentrates on showing how well Bach mastered and subjugated writing pieces with a transverse flute, for his chamber music, for his soloist music and his concertante music.

Often considered a composer for sacred music, Johann Sebastian Bach also wrote numerous pieces intended to be played in courts, during private concerts or even in cafés! As shown by the rich musical activity of Café Zimmermann in Leipzig, where he was director of the Collegium Musicum (successor of Telemann). There he played weekly secular cantatas or his latest concertos with the participation of his sons.

This concert offers a journey throughout the great cantor of Leipzig’s work, from the most intimate formation (partita for solo flute) to the orchestral suite, by way of secular (the Café Cantata) and sacred cantata extracts. From the best known work (Badinerie from suite in B minor!) to the forgotten masterpieces (trio sonata BWV 1038).
